ROCHELLE - A new program launched by The DeLong Company will help farmers raise crops in more climate friendly ways. Grown Climate Smart is a brand that aims to track greenhouse gas reductions from growers who implement practices that benefit the environment. The company received a $40 million USDA grant for the program that is currently in use in 11 states covering nearly a quarter-million acres of farmland.
Dylan Vaca, Brand and Marketing Manager with DeLong, said that a local Rochelle farm family is involved with the program and the brand.
Kennay Farms, a certified sustainable farm, already engages in no-till practices and has a long history in the area. Their distillery, which integrates local ingredients, is now using climate smart farming practices to help not only the environment, but market their products.
“It’s been great to work with companies that are forward thinking,” said Vaca, “who use these sustainable farming practices and the commodities that come from it so consumers can purchase things that align with their moral compass.”
Farmers who enroll in the program will get per-acre cash incentives for integrating climate friendly methods, like cover crops.
“We are thrilled to announce that Grown Climate Smart products will be available through our many strategic partnerships.” said Chris DeLong, President of The DeLong Co., Inc., “With this new initiative, The DeLong Co., Inc., through Grown Climate Smart is able to directly work with growers in numerous markets and incentivize sustainable practices that positively influence both growers and consumers alike.”
