FREEPORT - Illinois State Senator Andrew Chesney has announced the launch of his summer reading program. The activity is open for students in first through sixth grade from the 45th District. Children are challenged to read eight books over the course of the summer, with books over 200 pages counting as two books. Once a student has completed the readings, a summer reading form should be filled out and signed by a parent or guardian.
“Summer reading is a key factor in the achievement gap between struggling and successful students, and those who do not read over the summer can lose as much as three months of reading comprehension skills,” said Chesney. “The ‘summer slide’ is a real thing, and it’s never too late to instill a love of reading in a child.”
Completed forms should be mailed to:
State Senator Andrew Chesney
50 West Douglas Street, Suite 1001
Freeport, IL 61032
The form can be accessed at https://senatorchesney.com/ChesneySummerReading.
“Those who complete my summer reading challenge will receive an official certificate of recognition from the Illinois Senate and an invitation to an ice cream party,” added Chesney. “I hope to have strong participation by students who recognize the value of a great book.”
Forms should be returned by August 4th to be eligible for the recognition. For additional information, please contact Senator Chesney’s district office at (815) 232-0774.
