ROCHELLE - Downtown Rochelle will see some major improvements to public areas. The city announced plans on Monday to build a stage, bathrooms, and improve parking by repairing lots and adding two new public lots. In 2022 the city was awarded the Rebuild Illinois Downtowns & Main Street Capital Grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. City Manager Jeff Fiegenschuh said the $1.1 Million will help fund part of the project.
“Mayor and Council approved a $2.5 Million bond issuance last year that is dedicated to this project” Fiegenschuh said, “I’ll be going through the budget later, but we’ll be using bond proceeds, grants, and some tourism dollars to help fund the bathroom and stage portion of this project.”
The corner of Lincoln Highway and Lincoln Avenue, plus the corner of Washington and 2nd Avenue will see new parking lot construction. Proposed plans by Willet, Hoffman & Associates for a downtown permanent stage and bathrooms were also unveiled. That structure would be built where parking lot 4 is located, adjacent to the park that used to have the gazebo that collapsed over the winter.
