SPRINGFIELD - Governor JB Pritzker has designated April as Fair Housing Month to advocate for equal housing opportunities. Illinois has a history of expanding housing protections for residents, ensuring fair and stable housing for all. The Illinois Department of Human Rights works to maintain housing protections within the state's Human Rights Act. Working with Housing and Urban Development, the IDHR enforces anti-discrimination measures and educates both housing providers and consumers. Recent amendments in 2023 to the Illinois Human Rights Act prohibit discrimination based on source of income or immigration status. If you believe you are a victim of housing-based discrimination in Illinois, you can file charges with IDHR or HUD.
